Inspiration Wings Grief Digest

We've selected a few timeless articles from our magazine (Wings 1993 - 2003) that may interest you; stories about real people facing real experiences and a journey to hope!

  • Victory Over the Pole The thirty-foot pole stretched straight up like a telephone pole, tall and intimidating; and we were told to climb it.
  • Making Special Unfortunately, some have missed the opportunity to do appropriate rituals immediately after the loss. In a sense, however, it is never too late to ritual a loss
  • Talking to Children About Terrorism Children’s reactions to terrorism, war, anthrax, and the perceived loss of safety and protection provide a window into their psyches
  • Spiritual Dilemmas Grief is a profoundly spiritual experience, however experienced and expressed by that person
  • Premonition and Patriotism  The tragedy of September 11, 2001 registered a sad bookmark in time. How could anything have prepared us––as individuals––as a nation, for this event?
  • After Joe Died Nothing that had happened in my life prepared me for dealing with Joe’s death.
  • Alzheimer's - Grief Misunderstood Marianne Caldwell's mother was afflicted with Alzheimer's disease when she wandered away from her home in 1991-never to be seen again. Marianne tells her story about grieving twice. Once after losing the vibrant woman she knew as her mother; and secondly, in death. Marianne faced an even more difficult time when her mother's body could not be found.
  • Sometimes We Don't Get Second Chances Nan Zastrow relates a lesson of choices. Although suicide is considered a choice, sometimes the victims are in such pain that they can't find any other answer. In a compassionate plea to understand her own son's death by suicide, Nan reminds us that sometimes we don't get second chances.
  • Even This Santa Gives Thanks When the holidays hurt, Nan Zastrow explains how she is learning to focus on the gifts she has received after the death of her son. These gifts are "coping" gifts that move her through one holiday to another.
  • Time and the River An amazing story about a boy, age 11, who placed a message in a bottle and put It in the river. The bottle was retrieved 25 years later after the young man's death. It revealed a unique message of love.
  • The Lion Within Me Still Roars A story about having the courage to speak. As grievers we often feel we shouldn't talk about our loved one who died. Nan Zastrow explains how we must acknowledge their existence and take pride in speaking their name.
  • A Cause to Grieve Nan Zastrow tells about losses of all kinds-not just through death. Each has unique characteristics that cause us to grieve.
